Item Alignment Opportunity

We are currently seeking California educators with experience and expertise in English language development (ELD) to participate in a two-day California English Language Development Test (CELDT) Item Alignment meeting. Educators will review current CELDT test items and evaluate the alignment of each item to the 2012 ELD Standards. Participants will be divided into five grade spans: kindergarten–2, grades 3–5, grades 6–8, grades 9–10, and grades 11–12.

Item Alignment Meeting

Location:
Sacramento, CA

Purpose:
Participants will use their experience and expertise to evaluate CELDT items by grade span to determine the alignment of the items to the 2012 ELD Standards.

Qualifications

We are seeking applications from current and retired California educators who have experience and expertise in ELD and/or experience teaching English to English learners (ELs) in kindergarten through grade twelve (K–12). K–12 teachers, administrators, EL specialists, literacy specialists and coaches, and college and university educators are encouraged to apply. Participants must be able to attend the meeting in its entirety. The meeting will run from 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. each day.

The minimum qualifications are:

  • A Bachelor’s degree
  • Expertise in English language acquisition or experience teaching ELs in grades K–12
  • Knowledge and experience working with the 1999 and/or 2012 ELD Standards

Desirable qualifications include:

  • A teaching credential authorization for ELD, specially designed academic instruction in English (SDAIE), or content instruction delivered in the primary language (e.g., Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development Certificate; Bilingual, Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development Certificate)
  • Specialized teaching certification in reading (e.g., Reading Certificate, Reading and Language Arts Specialist Certificate)
  • Experience evaluating test items for alignment to a set of standards
  • Experience writing or reviewing test items for standardized tests, especially tests for K–12 ELs
  • Recent experience administering the CELDT

Application Review and Participant Notification

Applicant information will be submitted to the California Department of Education for review and approval. You will be notified approximately three to four weeks before the meeting as to whether or not you have been selected to participate in this meeting. If you are selected, you will be given more information about the meeting, including travel arrangements.

Reimbursement and Travel Expenses

Travel expense for the meeting either will be prepaid or reimbursed to participants in accordance with state travel rules and rates, and school districts will be reimbursed for the costs of substitute teachers (if needed). If you plan to take a non-contract day with your district to participate in this meeting, you will be paid $200 per day. Reimbursement requests must be submitted no later than Friday, June 21, 2013 by both the participant and the school district, if applicable.
